The Return-to-Duty Process Explained

The Return-to-Duty process begins with your designated employer representative (DER). This person reports a drug or alcohol violation to the FMCSA clearinghouse. From there, you're required to select, contact, and schedule a consultation with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) such as Dr. Selena Sanchez. This allows both you and the Evaluator (Dr. Sanchez) to make sure there’s a mutually good fit and working relationship - and that there isn’t another SAP in the mix before moving forward with the process.

It is crucial to understand that once you have designated a SAP, you cannot seek out another one. Once you are certain Dr. Sanchez is the right fit, the next step will be to officially designate her in the clearinghouse.

Before you and Dr. Sanchez meet, you will be expected to complete assessments and legal forms. Please note, the initial meeting with Dr. Sanchez is in-person and in the Denver area only. During the initial in-person session, you and Dr. Sanchez will talk through the circumstances of your DOT violation, relevant history, and gather in-depth pertinent information. Based on all the information from your assessments and the initial evaluation, a personalized treatment and/or education plan will be determined - one by which you will be required to complete in order to move forward in the process.

Once the education and/or treatment plan is completed, you will meet with Dr. Sanchez again for a final in-person evaluation to determine if you're eligible to return to duty. If you're compliant and have successfully met all requirements, she will update the clearinghouse and notify your employer of your status.

It is likely you will have continuing care recommendations upon returning to work, and those requirements must also be satisfied.
